Manu Bhakar Wins Medals

Ace Indian shooter Manu Bhaker missed a Paris 2024 Olympics medal hat-trick after finishing fourth in the women’s 25m air pistol shooting event at the National Shooting Center in Chateauroux on Saturday. Despite occupying the top three places for most of the final, a poor series towards the closing stages saw her drop to fourth place after a shoot-off with Veronika Major of Hungary. Veronika Major won the bronze medal in the final. Jiin Yang of the Republic of Korea took the gold medal after beating France’s Camille Jedrzejewski in a shoot-off. Despite the way her campaign ended, Manu Bhaker made history aplenty at the Paris 2024 Games. Earlier, she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting after winning the bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol final. She then won the bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event with Sarabjot Singh to clinch India’s first shooting medal in a team event at the Olympics. On Saturday, Manu began the 25m air pistol shooting final with a solid performance in the first stage. She was tied in second place with 10 points after the first stage along with four other athletes. Jiin Yang took the top spot at the end of the first stage with 13 points to her name. Bhaker dropped to sixth after the first round of the elimination stage, tied on 13 points with Trinh Thu Vinh of Vietnam. However, the 22-year-old Indian shooter completed a perfect five in the second series to rise to third along with Jedrzejewski. The duo trailed Jiin Yang and Veronika Major at the top. Bhaker closed the gap with Jiin Yang down to just a single point with strong shooting in the sixth and seventh series. However, she managed just two points in the following series to drop down and was tied with Veronika Major in the fourth-place elimination round. In the ensuing shoot-off to decide fourth place, Manu Bhaker missed two targets compared to Veronika Major’s single miss and a historic third Olympic medal at the same Games slipped out from her in cruel fashion. No Indian has won three individual medals at the Olympics. PV Sindhu, Sushil Kumar and Norman Pritchard (British India) have two each. On Friday, the 22-year-old Manu Bhaker finished second in the qualifying round to make it to the eight-woman final. She had a qualifying score of 590, which was only bettered by Veronika Major’s 592 with the latter equalling the Olympic qualifying record in this event. Bhaker was the only athlete from the 21-member Indian shooting team to participate in multiple individual events. She has won two of the three medals in India’s Paris 2024 tally so far - all of which have come from shooting. Besides Bhaker and Sarabjot, Swapnil Kusale won a bronze medal in men’s 50m rifle three positions. Bhaker’s fourth-place finish in the women’s 25m pistol final was also the second for India in Paris after Arjun Babuta also suffered the same fate in the men’s 10m air rifle final. India's skeet shooters, Maheshwari Chauhan, Raiza Dhillon and Anant Jeet Singh Naruka, were also in action on Saturday. Naruka finished 24th in the men's skeet qualification round with a score of 116 and failed to make it to the final. Only the top six qualified. After Day 1 of the women's skeet qualifiers, Chauhan is in eighth place with 71 while Dhillon is currently placed 25th in the standings with 66. Heading into the second day of the qualifiers, Nele Wissmer of Germany and Amber Rutter of the USA lead the field with 74

Republic Day 2024

Republic Day is one of three Indian national holidays and it commemorates the enactment of the constitution of India, which occurred on January 26, 1950.

India had achieved independence from Britain on August 15, 1947 (which is celebrated as a separate national holiday), but for its first three years the country remained governed largely by the colonial Government of India Act of 1935.
Shortly after independence was declared, a constituent assembly elected by provincial assemblies went about drafting a constitution that would govern the newly independent nation.
After more than two years, the constitution of India was completed and solidified the establishment of India’s independent democratic government. January 26 was chosen as the official enactment date as a nod to the Purna Swaraj (complete self-rule) declaration of independence by the Indian National Congress in 1930 — considered the first concrete step toward independence from Britain.
With the 1950 constitution, the country was officially known as the Republic of India — a “sovereign socialist secular democratic republic” that “secures all its citizens justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity,” according to its preamble.

Parakram Diwas

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti is celebrated every year on 23 January to commemorate the birth anniversary of Subhas Chandra Bose, one of India's most prominent freedom fighters. The day is celebrated as 'Parakram Diwas' or Courage Day. This year marks the 127th Birth Anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. From establishing and leading the Indian National Army to forming alliances against the British during World War II, he was among the key figures to lay the foundation for the modern Indian state.

Subhas Chandra Bose was born on 23 January 1897 in Cuttack, Odisha. He was the ninth child of Janakinath Bose and Prabhavati Devi. Growing up, Subhas Chandra Bose was a bright student who completed his BA in Philosophy from the Presidency College in Calcutta (today known as Kolkata). His father also sent him to England to appear for the Civil Services Examination. He scored the highest marks in English and placed fourth overall.

It was in 1921 that he resigned from the Indian Civil Service and returned to India. His frequent run-ins with the authorities earned him notoriety as a rebel by the then-British government in India.

Netaji worked under the mentorship of prominent Congress leader Chittaranjan Das who, along with Motilal Nehru, left the Congress Party to form the Swaraj Party in 1922. He started a newspaper called Swaraj and even served as editor of the Forward, a newspaper started by Chittaranjan Das.

In 1923, Netaji was elected the President of the All India Youth Congress Committee and the Secretary of the Bengal State Congress. He briefly served as the mayor of Calcutta in 1930 as well.

In 1942, he formed the Indian National Army in Southeast Asia with the help of Japan, comprising of Indian soldiers the British Indian army captured in war. Netaji established a provisional government of Free India or Azad Hind in 1943 in Andaman and Nicobar, then captured by Japanese forces.

Subhas Chandra Bose is believed to have died in a plane that crashed shortly after take-off. Due to the mystery surrounding the circumstances of his death, the Government of India has since set up a number of committees to investigate the case.

Notably, the title 'Netaji', which means 'Revered Leader' in Hindi, was given to Subhas Chandra Bose by German and Indian officials at the Special Bureau of India in Berlin.

Now, on the occasion of Netaji's birth anniversary, here are some inspirational quotes by Subhas Chandra Bose:

"Give me blood, and I shall give you freedom!"

"Soldiers who always remain faithful to their nation, who are always prepared to sacrifice their lives, are invincible."

"Freedom is not given, it is taken."

"It is our duty to pay for our liberty with our own blood. The freedom that we shall win through our sacrifice and exertions, we shall be able to preserve with our own strength."

"One individual may die for an idea, but that idea will, after his death, incarnate itself in a thousand lives."

76th Army Day 15 January 2024

Every year on January 15, soldiers mark the highlights and achievements of Field Marshal Cariappa and the Indian Army.

The Indian Army, established in 1895, did not have its first Army chief until 1949. On this day, back in 1949, Field Marshal KM Cariappa became the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army after India received independence.

The country witnessed communal rights after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, prompting soldiers to come forward to maintain peace in the country. It was the right time to take over command of the Indian Army from the Britishers. Thus, Field Marshal Cariappa took over charges from General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief.
